Lt. Col. Donald Fielden, 50th Space Communications Squadron commander, officiated a ceremony activating operating location Norfolk Satellite Broadcast Manager, Norfolk Naval Base, Va., to the 50th Space Wing Jan. 22.

The Norfolk SBM is the first of three operating locations to be transferred from the Global Broadcast Service Joint Program Office to the 50th SCS in an effort to increase the operational and maintenance efficiency of the mission.

“The 50th SCS is enthusiastically accepting the challenges of supporting this exciting GBS mission,” said Colonel Fielden.

During the visit, 50th SCS also completed an inventory of the site’s multi-million dollar primary and support equipment, inspected the information assurance program and accomplished a survey in preparation for standardizing the administrative networks using Air Force approved controls and standards.

“Raytheon is very much looking forward to joining forces with the 50th SCS in ensuring continued excellence to [the] Global Broadcast Service mission,” said Buddy Wilson, Norfolk SBM site manager. “The 50th SCS brings an operational capability to GBS which will enable us to better serve the warfighter. We share the same belief of getting the right information to the warfighter at the right time and place…every time!”

The activation of the two remaining operating locations in Wahiawa, Hawaii and Sigonella, Italy will soon be accomplished with onsite ceremonies.
