Col. Michael Finn succeeds Col. Mitchel Butikofer, who has been assigned to the directorate of communications at Headquarters Air Mobility Command, Scott AFB, Ill.
Hundreds of Airmen and civilians were on hand to witness the ceremony and welcome the former executive officer of Air Force Space Command Commander, Gen. C. Robert Kehler.
“I am humbled by the great responsibility entrusted to me as the 50th Network Operations Group Commander, yet immensely proud to be part of such an incredible organization,” Colonel Finn said. “These are fascinating times, especially in Air Force Space Command, where we are responsible for space and cyberspace — two of the three domains in which the Air Force operates. The 50th Network Operations Group stands squarely at an intersection of space and cyber. We are on the ground floor of something big. We don’t know yet how big or what it will look like in the next few years, but it will be game changing.”
Col. Wayne Monteith, 50th Space Wing commander, officiated the ceremony and said Colonel Finn will continue the 50th NOG’s ongoing legacy of mission readiness and support.
As commander of 50th NOG, Colonel Finn is responsible for 1,500 military, Department of Defense civilian and contractor personnel assuring access to space and cyberspace by operating and maintaining the $6.2 billion Air Force Satellite Control Network and the $100 milliion communications and information gateway.
He was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps at the University of Mississippi and has held various positions ranging from software engineer to commander of the 509th Communications Squadron at Whiteman AFB, Mo.
He holds a Master of Arts degree in organizational management, a Master of Science for systems engineering/intermediate development education and a Master of Arts, strategic studies/senior developmental education.
His decorations include a Defense Meritorious Service Medal, six Meritorious Service Medals, a Joint Service Commendation Medal and an Air Force Commendation Medal.
