Tasters’ Choice: Profiles of Noteworthy Products

For Father’s Day, how about giving Dad a belt? A belt of cake, that is.

Sean Allen is the bartender/baker behind Cake Buzz, a Los Angeles cakery that makes pound cakes based on cocktails. From coladas to cosmos, Cake Buzz offers up to 500 hooch-drenched flavors that are as moist as they are rich and tasty. (The divine Godiva Dark Chocolate Liqueur and Vincent Van Gogh Dutch Chocolate Vodka Cake can be wrung out like a bar towel it is so “wet.”)

These cakes are not for people in a 12-step program or the faint of heart. Each potent confection contains 1 1/2 cups of alcohol (3/4 cup in the cake, 3/4 cup in the frosting). When I started to feel beautiful as well as witty after just three bites of Zombie cake (a boozy blend of apricot brandy, Grand Marnier, pineapple liqueur, Myer’s Rum and lime vodka), I knew it was time to put my fork down.

RESPONSIBLE CLEANING

Maybe all those years of inhaling rainforest fresh bleach fumes and citrusy antibacterial kitchen sprays have ruined my olfactory receptors for anything else. But Seventh Generation’s Multi-Surface Cleaner and Disinfecting Wipes, while eco-friendly with their lemongrass- and thyme-scented cleaning powers, conjured up images of anything but springtime. Try damp wool and hope chests. Manufacturers are reformulating the scent, so I’ve been told, to make it less heady.

Aroma aside, SG’s green cred is impressive. The company has the first disinfecting spray to meet Whole Foods Market’s stringent ingredient standards, and its cleaners are EPA registered to kill germs naturally (including those nasty Influenza A viruses such as H1N1).

And, as much as a body can without seeming unseemly, I love Seventh Generation’s 100 percent recycled paper towels. The unbleached, grayish-brown sheets aren’t gorgeous — no pastel or country kitchen motif here — but they are unscented, hypoallergenic and real workhorses. They can easily clean a tomato sauce-splattered stovetop, then stand up to being rinsed and wrung out for more abuse.

A jumbo roll of 120, 2-ply paper towels starts at $1.29 and is available at Whole Foods, Ralphs and Target. The 26-ounce spray bottle of multi-surface cleaner and the 35-count canister of disinfecting wipes each retails for about $4 at Whole Foods, Ralphs, Target and Babies ‘R’ Us.
