Duathlon offers fitness fun for families

By 2nd Lt. Ronald Davies

4th Space Operations Squadron

In support of the Year of the Air Force Family, the 50th Force Support Squadron will host a FitFamily Duathlon to continue to promote fitness for families.

FitFamily is an incentive program, where families have the ability to establish goals and observe their progress on the world wide web. FitFamily provides families tools to make healthy nutrition decisions, be active and have fun.

The 6th Schriever duathlon is set to begin June 26 at 9 a.m. Starting at the main fitness center participants will run one-mile to the Terra-Vista housing development, and then continue with a ten-mile mountain-bike ride, followed by another one-mile run back to the fitness center.

This year’s route differs from years past as their routes were chosen to accommodate construction zones.

A duathlon differs from its more commonly known cousin the biathlon in that a biathlon is a race consisting of two events whereas a duathlon has two events but one is completed twice.

“Whenever there is a triathlon, I do that, but if there isn’t one, then I do the duathlon,” said Dave Luplow. Mr. Luplow is a retired member who has been working with the Air Force for 43 years. He has competed in Schriever triathlons since 2001. When Schriever was unable to keep offering triathlons, Seth Cannello, Fitness Center director had to change the event to a dualthlon. Mr. Luplow has continued to compete in the duathlons. He trains for the Schriever events and sprint events in the State Games of America. “My goal is to finish and not finish last. So far, so good,” he said.

“It seems like the race changes yearly and no two races have been the same,” said Mr. Cannello. “That’s great for the people that do the races year to year because it’s like a new event, but it makes a little bit of a challenge for me since I have to find and map out the course every year.”

“I like the set up this year and it should be a fun event for those that participate,” he added.
