Occupants of 137 facilities along the “Banana Belt,” including barracks and fitness centers, will be without hot water Aug. 5-8 due to a boiler-upgrade project.
The Directorate of Public Works boiler-upgrade project will affect barracks and fitness center facilities in the 1000, 1100, 1300, 1600, 1800, 1900, 2000, 2100, 2200, 2300, 2400, 2500 and 2700 blocks of the Banana Belt and also includes building 8030. A map identifying the affected area and available shower locations is printed on Page 4.
The 45-year-old boiler scheduled for upgrade, which delivers hot water and provides heat to the facilities in the winter, has lived past its life expectancy, said Dan Golden, DPW Operations and Maintenance Division chief.
“Without the upgrade, a catastrophic failure could occur,” Golden said.
He said the boiler will be shut down Aug. 4, but affected building occupants “shouldn’t notice a change in hot water available” until Aug. 5 due to the amount of hot water in the system.
The $1.8 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act-funded project is an effort to increase energy efficiency, save Army dollars and help Fort Carson achieve its sustainability and Net Zero energy goals.
Facilities available for showering during the hot water outage include:
• Forrest Fitness Center, building 1843, open 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday and weekends from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• Indoor Swimming Pool, building 1446, open 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday; closed weekends
