Clothing swap provides outlet for spring cleaning

From 21st Space Wing Public Affairs Office

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Spring has sprung and along with the warmer weather comes spring cleaning. For many, this cleaning includes a stop at your local thrift store to drop off unwanted clothes from years past. Instead of stopping at the thrift shop, however, consider donating to the 50th and 21st Space Wing Children’s Clothing Swap.

The clothing swap is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 13 at the R.P. Lee Youth Center on Peterson Air Force Base. Clothing donations are accepted until April 10 said 1st Lt. Amanda Thurber, installation project officer.

“We are looking for any gently used children’s clothing, school uniforms, shoes, toys and maternity clothes,” said Thurber. “We are still in need of donations to make the event a success.”

Team Pete donation drop-off locations include Building 350, the Child Development Center, the Tierra Vista Community Center, the clinic and the R.P. Lee Youth Center. On Schreiver Air Force Base, drop-off locations include the TVC Community Center, the Airman and Family Readiness Center, the chapel resource room, the child development center and the fitness center.

The event is free and open to anyone with base access. Even if you are unable to swap, you may still shop.

The swap was originally created by Kayreen Crawford, wife of Col. Chris Crawford, 21st Space Wing commander, and Antoinette Ross, wife of Col. James Ross, 50th Space Wing commander at Schriever Air Force Base, in 2012.

“We thought there was a need for a clothing swap here with all the different bases surrounding Colorado Springs,” said Crawford. “We are a family and we have to take care of each other.”

Last year, more than 250 families participated in the swap, according to Crawford. This year is only expected to be bigger.

“It was a big success [last year] and we hope it continues even after we leave,” said Crawford. “We want to make this a tradition between Schriever and Peterson.”
