How do we keep the memory of our fallen warriors alive?
Lt. Col. Chris Todd, 3rd Space Operations Squadron commander recently posed this question to his squadron.
The answer according to the unit is simple, “Create an event that everyone can participate in to honor those who we have lost.”
This month, 3 SOPS is conducting a memorial 5K in conjunction with the Schriever Warfit Run scheduled for Wednesday.
The run will honor the lives of Tech. Sgt. Edward Weber, 50th Space Communications Squadron; Capt. Nicholas Goirigolzarri, 50th Operations Group; Airman 1st Class Edward Yu and Airman 1st Class Abtron “Tron” O’Neal, both from 3rd Space Operations Squadron.
“We lost members of our family and this is an opportunity to come together and remember them,” said Todd.
Master Sgt. Robert Henneman, 3 SOPS additional duty first sergeant, echoed the sentiment.
“It is important to really remember them,” Henneman said. “They were young Airmen. It is very sad that we didn’t have them for longer. However, they still had a very big impact on the people around them.”
Todd said the run although simple is a means to show how much we care about each other.
“These events strengthen our family unity,” he said. “We are a big family here at Schriever.”
He hopes the run will continue to be an annual event.
“You can’t do the mission of this wing without the people,” said Todd. “And we can’t forget about those people.”
The event will begin at 3 p.m. with opening remarks from 50th Space Wing leadership. The run will begin at 3:30 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, the indoor track will be used to run one mile instead of the 5K. At the end of the run, wristbands will be distributed with the phrase “Remembering Those Lost.”
