A walk down memory lane

The 50th Space Wing Chapel office coordinated and hosted “A Walk Down Memory Lane” Thursday, May 26, at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, ahead of Memorial Day.

“I think we’ve had a lot of loss as a community on base, but also personally, people have had a lot of personal losses within squadrons and units,” Chaplain (Capt.) Jennifer Ray, 50 SW, said. “It’s just been kind of hard, so I just wanted an opportunity for us to get together, walk alongside one another, grieve together, heal together and remember, because one of the ways we heal is by telling stories. It keeps them alive in our hearts.”

Ray opened the event with a prayer and opening remarks, followed by a story of personal loss from Master Sgt. Scott Devine, 21st Space Wing chaplain’s assistant. The event continued with a 1.5 mile walk around the indoor running track, which had placards placed around it with messages, such as “Remember what made them special to you,” “Remember their favorite food” and “Remember their favorite song.”

Participants walked around the track talking to each other about their loved ones on these topics among others. Participants placed messages to their loved ones on the balloons and released them in the sky to conclude the event.

“I really enjoyed the event. I have had some major losses in my family in the recent years and have been too busy to take time to think of them,” said Senior Airman Breanna Diaz, 50th Space Communications Squadron client systems technician. “It was nice to be able to take some time and put it toward them. I liked how there were signs telling you of ways to remember them, as in their laugh, favorite food, favorite thing to do, etc. I will definitely be going to any future walks down memory lane.”

Although this was the first event of this type hosted here, the chaplain team plans to continue the event annually for Team Schriever.

“Your chaplain corps is full of counselors and we are here to provide grief counseling or any type of counseling, family counseling, marriage counseling, we are available for that type of support; continued support,” Ray said. “Hopefully, people met a friend here today who can help walk with them through their grief process.”

Master Sgt. Scott Devine, 21st Space Wing chaplain’s assistant, and Tech. Sgt. Tawny Devine, 50th Space Wing chaplain’s assistant, take part in a 1.5-mile walk during the “A walk down memory lane” event at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, Thursday, May 26, 2016. The event was an opportunity for the Schriever community to come together and remember their loved ones who have passed away.
