FORT CARSON, Colo. — Evans Army Community Hospital (EACH) is currently providing COVID-19 vaccines to personnel in accordance with the DOD Vaccine Distribution Plan’s initial phase.

Eligible personnel include health care workers, emergency services and public safety personnel, critical national capabilities, and personnel preparing to deploy overseas.

“Our Evans team and Fort Carson mission partners have demonstrated flexibility and adaptability regarding the planning and execution of COVID-19 vaccine distribution,” said Col. Kevin Bass, commander, EACH. “We continue to follow the DOD distribution phases, which are consistent with (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) guidance and best the medical guidance available.”

EACH is offering the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to designated personnel to reduce the spread of COVID-19 within the community.

The COVID-19 vaccine is not mandatory. Any personnel who initially decline the COVID-19 vaccine during their respective phase will have the opportunity to be vaccinated later if they change their mind, based on availability. Those who decide to be vaccinated will receive the second dose 28 days after their first dose.

A shipment of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine arrived at EACH on Dec. 21, and the hospital began administering the vaccine the following day to health care workers, public safety and emergency services personnel.

Sgt. 1st Class Doreen Fajota and Sgt. Brittany Koppenhaver, two health care workers at EACH, volunteered to receive the hospital’s initial COVID-19 vaccines. Fajota and Koppenhaver shared an update on EACH’s Facebook page alongside the hospital command team — Bass and Command Sgt. Maj. AJ Santos — 24 hours after receiving their COVID-19 vaccine.

The hospital command team chose to receive their COVID-19 vaccines at EACH, along with command teams from U.S. Northern Command, U.S. Space Command and 4th Infantry Division.

EACH is currently gathering an extensive list of high-risk beneficiaries, to include patients 65 and over, enrolled at the hospital to prepare for future phases of the vaccine distribution plan.

Dates for vaccine availability in accordance with future phases will be announced once determined by EACH officials.

All personnel are advised to continue current mitigation measures, including frequent handwashing, wearing a mask and physical distancing until the risk of COVID-19 is substantially reduced.

EACH will continue to update the community online and on social media with the latest information on the COVID-19 vaccine distribution process.
