FORT CARSON, Colo. — For the first time in over a year and a half, the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Child and Youth Services (CYS) youth sports program staff will ensure football, soccer and cheerleaders are at Pershing Field at Fort Carson, Colorado, Sept. 11, 2021, as the fall season games begin.
According to Otis Forrest, youth sports director, Fort Carson CYS, football and soccer are two of the more popular sports offered by the youth center and players and staff alike are eager to get back on the field and compete. After nearly 18 months, Saturday cannot come fast enough to contain the enthusiasm for fall sports, he said.
“The NFL season kicked off Thursday and while that gets me excited, it also signals to me that our youth football and soccer seasons are also set to begin,” Forrest said. “There is something different about football and soccer for our athletes. Maybe it’s the way football and soccer really depend on the person next to you to be successful, but one thing is for sure, we have an enthusiastic group of athletes ready.”
Forrest said the cooperation between Fort Carson, Peterson Space Force Base and the U.S. Air Force Academy will continue with the upcoming season. He said games will alternate between the post and Peterson Space Force Base during the season. He said this gives the athletes from each installation the opportunity to play as many games as possible.
“The more exposure we can give the athletes to all aspects of the game, the more they are going to learn, and that is one of our primary objectives,” Forrest said. “We want to give our young athletes as many experiences as (possible) as they get older and move on to middle school and high school sports. We need to expose them to traveling to play games, playing opponents they don’t practice against or see regularly and (competing) at the highest level …, while also understanding now is the time for them to learn how to play their sport.”
Football, soccer and cheerleading will begin at 10 a.m. at Pershing Field Sept. 11, 2021.
